I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I do have my favorites and like to try different looks. While technology attempts to make it more convenient for us women (I recently found this app that let’s me take a photo and try on different hairstyles and makeup), it’s more fun to walk into a store, and makeup shops are usually prettily done, and I like to look through what’s new and available. Even if I don’t end up buying anything, which is many times the case, especially now given my tight budget, I still enjoy the exercise.

Now there are essentials and non-essentials, and while David will argue that all makeup is non-essential (I disagree!), there are items that we rely on throughout pretty much every day that live almost permanently in our handbags – that’s how I define what an essential is.

One of those essentials for me is Flawless by Benefit. I like it so much that when David asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I told him that’s was it. “Do you know what Benefit is?” I asked him. “Of course! The makeup!” He really knows a lot of stuff! I was super happy, when a week after my birthday, my friend Len surprised me with a new box! Amazing how a company founded in 1976 still excites ladies like me today.

Flawless by Benefit Unboxed

When I walk into a Benefit store I feel like I’m in a makeup version of Charley and the Chocolate Factory, for those of you who have seen that classic movie. Everything is so colorful that you want to use it right away. I can imagine many teenage girls dreaming of a bedroom looking like this and ready to play dress up. I think we are never to old to dress up and Benefit makes me want to do just that.

Flawless is a “custom powder cover-up for the face” as the packaging says. It’s a very clever product that can be used like dry powder but can also be wet and act as a foundation. It’s made of mineral powder so it won’t clog your pores while hiding imperfections. I have seen other brands stock mineral powder but Benefit is the only one I have come across that offers so many different shades perfect for any skin tone. It works perfectly with a highlighter type pen which is pinkish in color, useful to brighten the eyes or highlight the cheekbones.

These are all very useful since I apply my own makeup now unlike during my modeling days where I had the opportunity to work with some very awesome makeup artists. I would just sit there and they would do their magic. Wish I had paid more attention to the process because I’m learning these things only now!

If you have the budget to spare I would highly recommend Benefit, or at least saving up for it. Most cheap powders contain talc, which clogs your pores and wont do your skin any good. Remember some things are worth investing! You can visit one of the many Benefit stores. I like the space in the ground floor of the SSI Building on Highstreet Central BGC. Try out their products and different shades. More than anything it’s not so much about what the popular product is but about what fits your needs and matches your skin tone.

If you’re not ready to shop now, have a look. Trying is free and can be a lot of fun in itself!
